The Commonwealth boasts a plethora of events to keep this dragging, humid period full of refreshed entertainment and adventure! From fairs to festivals and concerts, catch a ride on the Breeze to cool you off and lift your spirits – take a look at what our routes have to offer!

Jollof, or jollof rice, is a dish consisting of long-grain rice, tomatoes, chilies, onions, spices, and meat or vegetables (or sometimes both). This West African delicacy can be enjoyed as a side dish, but many enjoy at as an entrée as it is hard to stop eating once you start. Come to DC to try all things jollof rice, enjoy music, and immerse yourself in an international experience a mere bus ride away from home.

You may have seen DC’s beautiful cherry blossoms paint the city pink in the spring, but have you seen what the blooms of summer have to offer? The summer lotus and lily reach peak bloom in July and are just as much a spectacle as their distant relatives in the center district. Come to Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, on the outskirts of the bustling city, to admire this annual, tranquil event and attend mindfulness activities such as Zumba, acrylic painting, and edible plant walks.

The Carytown Watermelon Festival boasts over 115,000 people and 3,000 watermelons annually and has become VA’s biggest one-day festival. Enjoy the music of 80 musicians; visit over 100 exhibits and vendors; take the kids to one of the largest kids’ areas of any festival on the east coast; and, most importantly, enjoy the seemingly infinite variations on this festival’s prized fruit: the watermelon.
